GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.: Democratic congressional candidate Jeff Thomas (MI-3) released the following statement on the President’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“DACA has helped hundreds of thousands of young people to further their educations, find better jobs, contribute to the economy, and deepen their connections to the communities in which they live. President Trump’s decision to imperil the security and wellbeing of so many of our friends and neighbors by ending the program is a tragic mistake.
A bipartisan group of legislators has already introduced The Dream Act of 2017 (S.1615/H.R.3440) as a replacement for DACA, and I am proud to support this bill. Ensuring that young people who have grown up in this country can continue to learn, work, and live without fear of deportation is good for our nation, good for the people of Michigan, and simply the right and decent thing to do.
I urge Justin Amash to turn his words of compassion for those helped by DACA into action, by joining me in support of The Dream Act of 2017, and showing leadership in convincing his colleagues to do the same.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.: Democratic congressional candidate Jeff Thomas (MI-3) released the following statement on the Senate Republican health care bill:
“Now that the so-called ‘Better Care Reconciliation Act’ has come to light, it is obvious why Senate Republicans wanted to keep it a secret for as long as possible. Like the similar bill (the AHCA) passed by Justin Amash and his colleagues in the House, it appears that it will lead to millions of Americans going without health care coverage, increase costs for seniors, and endanger people with pre-existing conditions. It breaks one of President Trump’s key campaign promises by cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, and puts some of our society’s most vulnerable members – pregnant women, children, people with disabilities – at risk, all to finance a massive tax cut for the very rich.
There is much work that needs to be done to ensure that every American has access to quality affordable health care, but this bill is a step in entirely the wrong direction. If enacted into law, its true cost will be counted in bankruptcies and lives, and those who vote for it will have blood on their hands.”

Grand Rapids resident is first 2018 challenger for Justin Amash
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.: Small businessman and nonprofit organizer Jeff Thomas declared his candidacy Tuesday for the Democratic nomination to challenge four-term Congressman Justin Amash in 2018. Thomas named education, healthcare, criminal justice reform, a living minimum wage and cleaning up the campaign finance system as top priorities.
“No American should have to suffer because they cannot afford the healthcare they need, go deeply into debt to get an education, or fear the law simply because of who they are. As your representative, I will fight to ensure that our government defends the rights and serves the needs of all its people – not just the rich and well connected – and that our future is one of shared opportunity and prosperity,” Thomas said.
