I believe in an America where all people are treated fairly by the law, their rights respected, and their voices heard. That we are created equal is the basic principle on which this country was founded, and that means all of us, without exception.
I will support legislation to:
- Replace the failed policies of the “war on drugs” – such as harsh mandatory minimums and civil asset forfeiture – with solutions that work, such as regulating marijuana alongside alcohol and tobacco, and confronting drug addiction as a public health problem to be treated, not a criminal act to be punished.
- Hold law enforcement organizations accountable for the fair and compassionate treatment of those they are meant to serve and protect, to help bring communities and police forces together in addressing crime as partners, to provide the necessary resources to realize that vision, and to end the barbaric use of for-profit prisons.
- Fight the corrupting influence of money in American politics, and ensure that the people’s voice is heard in Washington. This will require campaign finance reform, a legislative or constitutional fix to the Citizens United ruling, measures to counteract voter suppression efforts, and likely the establishment of a system of public financing for all Federal elections.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
